Backlighting: what is it and what is it used for?

Which is more convenient, frontlight or backlight?
Whenever an engineer is faced with a machine vision project, he must design and plan what type of lighting to use. A correct choice of lighting will greatly reduce the hours of programming required and increase the robustness of the application.
The frontlight is the one whose light emission is between the camera and the object of work, the light that reaches the lens is a reflection of the incident light of the object, it is widely used in projects where speed is an important factor or where the object is placed at a high distance from the camera. The main problem of this type of configuration is the existence in many cases of glare or lack of homogeneity on the surface, forcing the use of a polarizing filter or a DOMO configuration to solve this type of problem.
The backlight illumination is the one where the light emission is generated from behind the object, the light incident to the camera is the one emitted directly by the luminaire and not reflected by the object. This type of illumination is specially recommended for the detection of contours and shapes, and its use is not recommended in applications where color detection is required or in applications where the object of analysis is on the upper face of the part, since this illumination provides an all/nothing configuration of the light, maximizing the contrast and eliminating the problem of brightness and lack of homogeneity.
Our solution
In the Lumher brand we have the BD series, it is a backlight made of anodized aluminum that has IP65 sealing and wavelengths most used in vision -White 5000K-Red 625nm-Infrared 850nm-Ultraviolet 385nm.
How does it work?
Both the mechanics and the internal electronics are specially designed to maximize homogeneity allowing continuous, pulsed or stroboscopic operation. With its robust and compact design specially designed for this type of applications and the different anchoring possibilities you will maximize the possibilities of your vision projects.
